Nature in Norway (NiN)

Nature in Norway (NiN) – NiN is the Norwegian standard for describing and classifying ecological variation across terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments.

The first version of NiN was published in 2009 and an updated version 2.0 was published in 2015, however there was relatively little focus on development of NiN marine and freshwater systems in these versions. The development of NiN is a project coordinated by the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (Artsdatabanken) and led by Professor Rune Halvorsen at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo. Work is currently underway towards the next revision of NiN due to be published in 2022, and includes considerable development of NiN marine. MAREANO scientists are actively involved in various expert groups related to the updating process and MAREANO data will form the basis for development and testing of the deep water system.  At the present time MAREANO produces landscape (geomorphological) maps that comply with NiN, and Ecosystem (habitat) level maps will be produced once NiN theory and mapping guidelines are sufficiently well developed for offshore waters.
